The UK powered by solar: how far the grid has come

Britain's electricity grid looks very different from a decade ago. Coal is gone, wind is the biggest single source on many days, and solar has moved from a rounding error to a serious contributor. The June 2026 heatwave put that on display, with rooftop panels carrying a real share of demand exactly when the country reached for the fan.

Solar's record run in 2026

2026 has been a record year for British solar. UK solar generation passed 16 GW for the first time, more than 50% higher than during the 2022 energy crisis, and the peak half-hourly solar generation record was broken eleven times in the first half of the year alone. Britain also set a new all-time monthly solar generation record in May, beating the previous high set in May a year earlier. At its strongest, solar has met as much as 39% of Great Britain's electricity demand.

What happened during the June heatwave

As temperatures pushed above 37ยฐC on 21 and 22 June 2026, the country's roughly 1.9 million homes with rooftop solar were generating hard. Analysis by the think tank Ember found a typical rooftop system produced around 15 kWh a day over the hottest days, the equivalent of running a 3 kW whole-home air-conditioning unit for five hours. Across all those homes, that added up to the equivalent of about 10 million solar-powered air-conditioning hours every day of the heatwave. Solar peaks at the middle of the day, which is also when cooling demand and grid prices climb, so it shaves the most expensive, gas-heavy part of the day.

Why this matters for the grid

Solar's value is in its timing. It generates most on bright days and around midday, displacing the gas plants that would otherwise set the price at peak. That complements the rest of the clean-power shift: Britain's last coal power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, closed in September 2024, ending 142 years of coal-fired electricity. The remaining challenge is the evening, when solar fades and demand stays high, which is where batteries and flexible tariffs come in.

What it means for your home
