The method, in plain terms
Generation. A 1 kWp system in the UK produces roughly 800 to 1,050 kWh a year depending on location. We pull the figure for your postcode from PVGIS (the European Commission's satellite irradiance model), then scale it by your system size and reduce it for roof orientation and shading.
What you keep. Solar saves the most when you use the power as it is made. Without a battery, a typical home uses about 30% of what its panels generate; the rest is exported. A 5 kWh battery lifts self-use toward 55%, a 10 kWh battery toward 65%, capped at what you actually use.
The money. Power you use yourself is worth your import rate (you avoid buying it). Power you export earns your Smart Export Guarantee rate. Install costs use MCS median figures, scaled by system size, with 0% VAT (zero-rated until 31 March 2027). The 25-year figure assumes 0.5% panel degradation a year and 4% energy-price inflation.
