What does it cost to charge at home?
Charge overnight on an off-peak tariff and the cost per mile drops well below petrol. A plug-in hybrid only saves on the share you drive electric. Pick your vehicle, choose your units, and see the yearly cost.
Petrol car to compare against
Includes ~10% charging loss. Petrol 2.31 kgCO₂e/litre; grid electricity 0.207 kgCO₂e/kWh (DESNZ 2024).

The cost-per-distance maths
Electricity used. Distance divided by efficiency gives the energy into the battery; we add 10% for charging losses. The home share is charged at your off-peak rate, the rest at the public rate.
Plug-in hybrids. Only the electric share of your miles is charged; the rest burns petrol at the economy you set. We compare the total to running every mile on petrol, so a PHEV that drives half electric saves roughly half of what a full EV would.
Units. The toggle converts every distance figure between miles and kilometres, and petrol economy between mpg and litres per 100 km, so the comparison stays consistent whichever you prefer.
